To connect your home PC to your network, it doesn't really matter which you buy. I'd go with whichever one is cheaper. Both cables will transmit gigabit ethernet fine, but I doubt your modem/router is equipped to handle that. But, to answer your question:
Basically the only difference between the two is that CAT6 offers better resistance to crosstalk at the ends of the cable.
Without getting too in depth, each ethernet cable has 4 pairs of wires inside the outer sheath. Since these wires are wrapped close together inside the sheath, the signals traveling down the different pairs sometimes overlap each other - crosstalk. This can affect data transfer speed and the accuracy of the data that's delivered.
If you're talking long range or high bandwidth enterprise-type applications, CAT6 is the way to go. ESPECIALLY if you're hoping for gigabit ethernet speeds or 10-gigabit speeds in the future. Deeper, geekier stuff can be found in the sources if you're interested.

Cable colour is beauty. On each cable there's a difficult hodgepodge of words and numbers, yet what you're searching for is CAT or classification 5 or 5E or 6. once you be conscious that it ability the cable is the variety it really is designed for Ethernet site visitors (and different stuff). One comprehend caution: there's a particular version of an Ethernet cable commonplace as a CROSSTALK cable. it really is going to be labeled as such, yet each so often it isn't. you'll no longer damage some thing no matter if it really is and also you take advantage of it, it basically received't artwork. BTW it truly is used to hookup 2 pcs to at least one yet another straight away.

RJ45 cables, are among the best Ethernet cables on the market for connecting network devices to Ethernet hub. The connector is the weak point in an ethernet cable, choosing the wrong one will often cause grief later.

explains all the different types of ethernet cables
( I never new there was a difference)
at any rate, for basic home computing, I would just choose the least expensive one

Cat 6 is shielded Twisted Pair(STP) Cat 5e is Unshielded Twisted Pair(UTP)
Basically, Cat 6 is less flexible but still pretty flexible anyways and it helps shield against electromagnetic interference from things like your monitor.
But as for the speed of them, right now they are both rated the same and can both be used. As for brand: for home use? doesn't matter at all. I use Dynex myself anyways and it works just fine.
