Blunt means brutally honest.

The difference between truth and blunt truth might be:

BLUNT: "Your butt looks enormous in those jeans"

TRUTH (but not so blunt): I think your Levi's are more flattering on you than those jeans

Blunt means hard truth spoken straight out, the second phrase means that they want the truth told to them in a way they can accept it with ease, not being hit with it.

Blunt in this sentence means telling someone what they want to hear; not things as they really are, I take it to mean also, that one cannot handle the truth; they cannot deal with things as they really are; they need to be protected and coddled Keep me away from the reality of life as it truly is.

Blunt as opposed to sharp.
The sharp truth is the same matter, and cuts you apart.
Blunt is kinder on you.
