I am looking for something very rural yet within an hour or so of a larger town/city.

I'd suggest anywhere north of Nashville along I-65. I travel through there occasionally on my way to and from Owensboro, Kentucky, and like the fact that it's not too far from Nashville but still fairly quiet.

Hello, Middle Tennessee is a great place to live. There are many places that have that small town feel that you seek. Franklin, TN has a beauftiful little square with lots of shops, historics houses etc. People really seem to be falling in love with that area as the real estate has went up so much there. To much for me though. Spring Hill, and Thompson Station are also around the same area. There is also a smaller place called lynnville Tennessee that has a cool little main street deal with shops and stuff. There is a little restuarant there called Soda Pop Junction which I ate at once while visiting. A little smokey but good. There are so many small towns that you might just want to take a trip and scout for yourself. The closer you are to Nashville and Franklin Tennessee the more your real estate and cost of living will be. The further south you go from Nashville the cheaper it will be. Visit this group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Middle_TN_Friends/ for Middle Tennesseans on yahoo maybe you can ask some of the other locals what thier opinions are. The group owner has posted some local links I think. There has been growth in another small town called Chapel Hill TN. There are so many little small towns here I just cant think of them all right now. I have lived here my whole life and just like any other state it has its good places, and bad places. I think you will be happy here. GoodLuck!

There are a lot of them. I've driven through there several times. I would say your best bet would be to pick your larger city first. Then contact the chamber of commerce there for literature on the city and state. They will send you a free packet. Then take a week off, stay in the larger city, and spend your week driving around to discover the area. Head in all directions...north one day, east another, and so on. Ask the locals who work at the hotel for your desire and they can probably give you some good direction. You want to give yourself a chance to see and compare. Not just throw a dart at the map. Tennessee is beautiful. Searching for your dream will be as much fun as living it. Good luck. Hope this helps!!
