When I try to boot my computer I get a black screen that says

"Invalid system disk"
"Replace the disk, and then press any key."

Pressing any key just gives me the same message over and over again.

It's a black screen with white writing.

I do not have recovery CDs!! They didn't come with my computer and I never made them.

HP will walk me through fixing it for $35 but the computer is already 4 years old and the monitor needs replacing anyway...

I'd like to get it running just to get the pictures of my kids, address book, etc off of it to put on the new computer.

Can anyone out there give me directions to fix it?!

You might have a floppy disk or CD in a drive and the BIOS boot sequence is set up to attempt to boot off of a floppy or a CD first before it attempts the C drive. You can change the boot sequence by going into BIOS and finding the boot sequence selection and changing it.

Check to see if there are any other discs of any sort in any other drives. If there are, remove them and see if this fixes the problem. I get the same thing if I accidentally leave a floppy in the floppy drive because my boot sequence is something like A, CD drive, C drive, in that order.

99% oft he time "invalid system disk" refers to a floppy in the drive.

Check your drives and remove any disks that may be in there, at the same time, remove any USB flash sticks that you may have plugged in.

Reboot your computer after removimg floppies, or CD's or any flash stick; you shouldn't get an error.

For your hard disk to be shot, you would see an error message telling you there was no boot device. At the worst, you may need to load your Windows.

On the bright side, it won't overwrite your files if you tell it to repair your installation.

Best of luck to you.

There should be a floppy disk left in the drive if you see that message. Just remove it and restart the computer. No need to go through all these fancy BIOS tweaking solutions. I think the rest of the answers given to you are a waste of time to read and stupid.

Go into your system Bios and check to see if someone change the boot order on your PC. Change it back if this is the case. It should boot from the Hard drive first. Check your floppy drive to see if you have a disk in there.
