They both make great pets, but for different reasons.

Pros for cats:
Highly independent.
Can leave for a weekend without getting a pet sitter.
QUIET for the most part.
Soft, snuggly, but not overly cloying.
Don't take up much space.

Pros for dogs:
They want to please their people.
They are almost always happy to see their people.
Snuggly.

Cons for cats:
Highly independent.
You have to clean a litter box.

Cons for dogs:
Need constant attention.
Can be loud.
Must have a sitter to go away for the weekend.

Personally, I prefer cats to dogs. But both make great pets!

I think this really depends on the person that is getting the pet. How much time do you have to give, what is the size of the area you live in etc.

If you want a pet that is less time consuming, get a cat. While they definitely need lots of love and attention, they seem to be better able to adapt to long periods (such as while you are at work) of alone time without becoming bored (and then possibly destroying things to amuse themselves lol). They are more self reliant in general than dogs are.

If you want a pet that will require a bit more time, get a dog. They really enjoy having people around and love to interact with you. Once they are older, they do much better with the alone time, but as pups, they can get bored easily (just like little kids :) so you will need to make sure there is plenty of stimulus around for him. They are also more reliant on you than a cat will be, as they generally can't let themselves outside (unless you have a doggie door installed - not a great idea while still puppies)

These are only a very few of the things to take into consideration. Please think about which animal would fit better into your lifestyle, and then do some research on the different breeds available. Most will have different temperments and needs also.

Good luck to you, and enjoy your new baby!

I don't think there is a better pet. A cat is more independent and is a good pet to have around if you do a lot of work because it won't bother you, although, a dog is a fun, loyal, companion that will love to play with the owner. Like I have been told: "You need a cat to ignore you, and a dog to adore you."
Which one would you prefer?

Depends on what you are looking for. Dogs tend to be very affectionate and some consider them to be too affectionate to the point of being irritating and distracting. Plus, you have to train them not to poop in the house. But most dogs will really love you. Dogs tend to be very intelligent and you can easily teach them to do all kinds of things.

On the other hand, cats are stand offish and dignified. Usually they only show affection to humans when they want to. Most cats are calm and not distracting. Usually you don't have to train them to poop in the litter box, they do that by instinct. There is something very relaxing about having a fat and lazy cat around the house.

My best advise is for you to talk to friends who own one or the other. And, spend some time around their cats and dogs then you can figure out which is right for you.

It all depends on your preference. If you enjoy a quiet, solitary companion than a cat is the choice for you. If you want a more lively friend, someone to play around with and take for walks, then a dog would be ideal. I myself like dogs more, but I do enjoy cats as well.

It depends on your lifestyle. If you like a pet that is kind of aloof and doesn't have a lot of energy, then you might be a cat person. If you have a lot of energy and you want an animal that is loyal and requires a lot of love and attention (not that cats do not) then you might be a dog person. It depends on what kind of personality you have.

Depends on personal preference - although my cats act like dogs most of the time. Stella follows me around EVERYWHERE I go and Patches is a frisky lil thing thats always runnin around the house. They both go in and out the house as they please (even though they don't have collars - which is normally not a good idea but everyone in the neighborhood knows who they are anyway).

It would really depend on your lifestyle. Remember, dogs constantly need to be let out and walked at least twice a day.
