if a chemical equation is impossible to balance, what is most likely the problem?

Generally one of the chemical formulas is not written correctly. It could also be due to forgetting that elemental oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, chlorine, fluorine are diatomic.

In my experience the usual offender is that you may have the formula of one or more of the products wrong. It would be hard to balance:

H2SO4 + NaOH --> NaSO4 + H20
