How do I jump start it? I understand that I sound like an idiot. But I have never done it before.

clean your terminals and then have someone jump start you. Place the red (+) cable on the positive (+) battery post. that is the one that goes to the starter. and the black one to the negative (-) battery post. This wire is usually black. On the good battery place the other red cable to the (+) positive battery post but place the black (-) cable on a metal bracket on the motor. Make sure the metal bracket is not mounted on rubber or it will not make a connection..above all be extremely careful as sparks could detonate your battery causing you extreme burns..

Using a set of jumper cables, connect the red wire to each positive battery cable and the black wire to each negative battery cable and then try starting the car with the dead battery. After the vehicle with the dead battery has started you can unhook the jumper cables and drive the vehicle, but keep in mind it will either need to have the battery recharged or at least driven for a period of time to put a sufficient charge back into the dead battery or it will fail to start again. Good luck.

Ok, to jump start you should get your jumper cables out and connect the red side to the positive (+) post on the battery. Then connect the black negative (-) cable to the battery. Always connect the negative side last that way the battery doesnt spark when you connect it. Remove the negative side first when removing the cables

Check the battery connections and if there good you can try jumping the car.however I have seen bad battery's that wouldn't take a jump at all in which case you will have to buy a new battery.Good luck

how do you know the battery is dead? if you check the voltage, it should put out 12 volts (i think). try to jump it. if a good battery won't start the engine, it might be the alternator. ask again if it's neither of those two.
