The utility companies in this country are true monopolies. They can raise your rates whenever they want all they have to do is send their PAC to pay off the state senators and the allow them to raise rates.
Microsoft is a company that benefited from being the only company that provided the services they did which gave them an unfair advantage when other companies emerged. Their inability to keep up ultimately led to their demise and monopoly lawsuit against Microsoft.
