For example, 24 or Lost. These shows have nothing to do with real life, and although I have watched both shows, I felt like they were a waste of time because they didn't teach me anything, it was basically the same as playing computer games: boring and pointless. I would only start watching serialized dramas if everyone I hung out with watched them, so that I would know what they were talking about (like golf in the corporate world.) Why do people enjoy watching these shows that have nothing to do with their lives and probably never will? What makes these shows appealing?

Who said every TV show is supposed to teach you something?? I don't watch Lost, but 24 is one helluva rush! I hold my breath through half of it. Besides, no matter how bad of a day I've had, it's comforting to know that Jack Bauer will have a way worse one.

Why read a book? Why watch a movie? A large portion of television, books, and movies have nothing to do with real life. It's entertainment. It's fantasy. And I find it nice that I can escape into the tv shows, into books, into movies, and be a part of a world I will never know. It's because they have nothing to do with our lives that we love them.

Serialized dramas on TV are the fast food chains of entertainment...go watch a classic film.

That is the whole point. They don't have nothing to do with our lives. I watch One Tree Hill, OC, Dog the Bounty Hunter and the Shield. These shows take me away from my stressed, responsibility filled life for the hour that they are on and take me into their lives whether they are factual or fictional.
