I have used both and I like Blockbuster alot better. There are two differences between Netflix and Blockbuster. One has already been stated, the fact that you can just take your DVDs back to a Blockbuster store and get a free rental while waiting for your next one to show up in the mail.
The second difference between the two is that Netflix does what is called "throttling". If you rent alot of movies Netflix will not send out your next choice as fast as they could have. This saves them money on postage which then guarantees more profit off of your monthly fee. They will also give newer members faster service on new movies to get them hooked so they will stay members thinking the quality and quantity of movies will stay the same when in fact both will go down with time.
If you are trying to make a choice I would go with Blockbuster.
Here is a page about Netflix......http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11262292/
EDIT: To respond to Dave-Netflix admits to the practice of delaying DVDs to high volume users. Just click on the link I provided for the news story about it. I had Netflix for a year and I was a very high volume user and I did notice a change in delivery speeds so I looked it up on line and found a few sites with this complaint. But the bottom line is use the one that fits your needs the best.

After experiencing both, I have a positive and negative about both...Netflix ships really fast. If you return a movie, you can expect one within 2-3 business days. Blockbuster on the other hand has a slower shipping schedule (at least for me) I would return a movie and recieve another one within the following week. The greatest thing about Blockbuster is the option to return the movie to the store-they ship it out and you recieve a FREE movie rental from the store! It all depends on whether or not you have a Blockbuster chain near you. The shipping seemed slower than Netflix...I guess its a matter of how often you like to watch movies!!

Netflix has a HUGE range of pricing, depending on how often you watch movies you can pick the plan that fits you best. (Everything from the 5 movies a month for $5.55 to an infinite* number a month for about $40) I don't have a blockbuster close to where I live so the only advantage I see with Blockbuster (being able to return movies to the store and get a new one right away) is lost on me. I LOVE Netflix, great selection I have found VERY FEW movies that they don't have for rent (and of those I SERIOUSLY doubt that blockbuster would have them either) *limited only by the speed of the USPS

Odd. I just saw a commercial for this. I didn't think there was a difference until I saw that. I guess ads work.
You can go to a Blockbuster and trade out movies whereas with Netflix, you can only go through the mail.
That's the only difference I know of.

The biggest difference (and advantage) is that with Total Access by Blockbuster, you can go to your local Blockbuster store and trade in movies instead of waiting for them in the mail.

I disagree about offering faster service for new members....
We have had Netflix for almost 2 years now.... If we send out a DVD in time, Netflix gets it the next day and ships out the next available movie and we usually get it the day after that....
I just mailed off some movies late in the day last Saturday and they shipped out the new movies this afternoon.. they should arrive in our mailbox tomorrow...
I love Netflix.... they have all the movies and TV shows you could ask for and like I said the service is pretty quick....
"The second difference between the two is that Netflix does what is called "throttling". If you rent alot of movies Netflix will not send out your next choice as fast as they could have. This saves them money on postage which then guarantees more profit off of your monthly fee." (quoted from the poster above)
this is soo not true... we rent a lot of movies and we have never noticed a slow down....

Go with the "underdog." Netflix invented the concept so go with them to keep them in business. Otherwise we all might be stuck going to Blockbuster b/c Netflix goes bankrupt. Netflix has an amazing selection of TV shows, foreign flicks, movies, everything you can think of. I'm not sure about Blockbuster's selection but please please support the underdogs! Blockbuster already put smaller video chains out of business, please save Netflix from the same fate.
