I was 4 years old when my mother first took me to a dentist, who found two cavities. From that age until I was 18, my mother took me to the dentist every six months, at which time, every tooth in my mouth had been filled for at least one cavity; some two and three. There is no lower-age limit on cavities. Some children develop cavities as young as one-year of age. Even though these teeth are considered "baby teeth" cavities still need to be addressed.
Dentists and pediatricians recommend cleansing of the teeth beginning as soon as teeth begin to develop, wiping the teeth with a clean, soft cloth that has been dipped in warm water.
As diligent as a parent may be with their children's dental care, heredity does enter the equation. I fought cavities and periodontal problems until I was 50, when the only solution was dentures, which I have had for the past 16 years.
My daughters, even though they had dental care throughout their childhood and teens, are experiencing severe dental problems, resulting in expensive dental procedures. Heredity often defies the most extensive dental care a parent can provide their young children.
As a parent, the best you can do is take your child to a dentist for periodic checkups. As a pre-teen, teenager, or young adult, dependent upon your parents for financial support, your only recourse if to let your parents know you have some dental issues, and rely on them to find the resources to help.
Because of the high cost, dental care is the first thing people "put off", and the last thing they consider "important".
