Do you think this is because of Instant Messaging and/or watching too much T.V.? What do you think will be the effects will be of an (almost) illiterate generation?

It is interesting that I made a grammar mistake ~ maybe reading so many misspelled things has affected me as well! And I wouldn't say I am "passing judgment" ~ I think it's pretty obvious there is a lack of spelling and grammar skills in the youth of America.

I think its mostly because we have so many illiterate people in this country, and with the younger generation, all they do is talk in acronyms and abbreviations therefore when they are instant messaging, they never learn how to write correctly. Plus, lets face it, our educational system is horrible and kids don't even crave education. I know thats a generalization , but I think its true overall. Its hard to attract good teachers when you are paying them 30,000 a yr.

Many people are lazy. They insist on using "chat-speak" instead of typing the message. I always use correct spelling and grammer when typing (and also when I speak).
How a person types reflects on their intellegence. So if a person uses little to no correct spelling, incorrect grammer, or over using "chat-speak", then it seems that person is either lazy dumb.
Am I to guess that it hurts your eyes to read garbled text as well?

I think that people are reverting back to primitive beginnings with the evolution of society. Technology and the de-popularization of writing and reduction of time dedicated to an elaborate linguistic curriculum means that people on average in our society will be less literate, and/or less attentive to correct spelling and grammatical usage.

This is my favorite question EVER! I see tons upon tons of spelling mistakes and it irks me. There is even a spell check button but people are too lazy to use it. It saddens me that I see questions from adults with more errors than some of the ones from younger users.

It's called the "dumbing" down of America. Yes, technology has a lot to do with it, however, I believe that it is more the educational system and poor parenting. Just my thoughts......

Drives me crazy. I do believe that both writing and speech "evolve" over time. (hundreds of years) Just because what we think now is incorrect or poor spelling, it may become a higher level of thinking and more efficient way to communicate in the future. (over time)

People have been illiterate since I was a child, it's nothing new. It isn't because of TV or video games. It's simple laziness.

People are generally stupid. We do stupid things. It's part of being human. You're pretty much right. People these days are too cought up in technology instead of living their lives like a normal human being.
