I have limited space for them to grow. Is there a plant that is small and also free flowering that is fragrant?

You need to re-state your question to include what part of the country (or world) you reside in so that you choose wisely. Jasmine does not survive extreme cold. Do you prefer a vine or a shrub? How about annuals or perennials? How much sunlight will the plant receive in its new home? How big or little is your available space? Re-post.

I'm not sure if you asking for an indoor plant or an outdoor plant. For the outdoors I'd have to say wysteria smells wonderful. It's a got a very strong scent. You can usually find them at the local plant nursery/Home Depot/Lowes during the spring. I agree with the other answers about both types of Jasmine. They both are very fragrant. Now if you are talking about indoors you could try hyacinths (they can go outdoors also) or bonsais. The hyacinth has a very strong fragrance and you can easily keep it near a window. If your home has limited space you could try buying an Orange Jasmine Bonsai tree or a Gardenia Bonsai tree. There are many other flowering Bonsai trees to consider. Some are fragrant some aren't. Either way, you'll have some really beautiful plants that smell lovely and are great conversation starters as well as pleasing to the eye. Hope some of this helps. I've added a website for some bonsai trees that you could look at if you're interested.

There are many trees that fit the description you have given. Here are a few: Amelanchier Laevis - Serviceberry Chionanthus Virginicus - fringe tree Citrus- oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and limes all are famous for their fragrance. Erica Arborea - tree heather Malus Baccata - Siberian Crabapple Robinia Pseudoacacia- the black or common locust Styrax Obassia - fragrant snowbell There are also a lot of plants that are considered to be shrubs, which either take on the proportion of trees or are trained into tree form.

Jasmine in white and Carolina Jasmine in yellow are evergreen very fragrant plants, but my gosh, they cover entire fences and grow everywhere..........don't know how you could control them.........lavender is a better choice, but I would plant annuals as the seasons permit.....anything purple, like petunias is quite fragrant, 10 week stock is only about 12" tall and knocks your socks off with fragrance. There are too many annuals to list with fragrance. Are you set on something evergreen because i can look some more.

Jasminum sambac (syn. Nyctanthes sambac) is a species of jasmine native to southern Asia, in India, Thailand, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Common names include Arabian Jasmine, Kampupot, Melati (Malay and Indonesian Language), Sampaguita (Tagalog language), and Mallipu ([Tamil]).

It is an evergreen vine or shrub reaching up to 1-3 m tall. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of three, simple (not pinnate, like most other jasmines), ovate, 4-12.5 cm long and 2-7.5 cm broad. The flowers are produced in clusters of 3-12 together, strongly scented, with a white corolla 2-3 cm diameter with 5-9 lobes. The flowers open at night, and close in the morning. The fruit is a purple-black berry 1 cm in diameter.

Jasmine is a vine, and it can stay contained, will need to trim, but gives off the strongest most fragrant scent

If you have a sunny area, Heliotrope is one the most fragrant flowers you can grow. They are pretty too.

I happen to like the Carolina Jasmine. You can keep trimmed in to compact plant, or you can make a topiary.

Have fun! Good luck-
