M1 type of car is used to classified saloon car and/or passenger car, including small car. But for small car itself, there is no standard classification.

In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency, actually does classify cars based upon storage and passenger compartment volume for its annual fuel economy ratings. Trucks are classified based on "gross vehicle weight rating." Visit http://www.fueleconomy.gov for more information. I would assume the UK has an equivalent agency.

Why cant you decide if it is a car you want based on the demensions that are provided for every car. Who cares how it is classified, decide on the size you are looking for and buy it.
