Legally, maybe but more than likely no. You would really have to believe that someone would not only mean to carry out the threat but was capable of it. Add to that they would have to be in your immediate area, as in your personal space and you were cornered and the person was making movements towards you. Even under those circumstances you may still be found guilty of assault.

If you can not do it, then that would be best for you.

If your life is in immediate danger then you have the right to do whatever is necessary to defend yourself. But generally speaking, no more then what is necessary. There may or may not be a duty to try and walk away or "retreat" in Mich.
If someone just threatens to kill you at some point in the future you need to call the police and have them arrested or obtain a restraining order.
So in short the answer to your questions is, it would depend on the circumstances.

No. I would phone your state police department right away. Tell the state troopers what threats were made against that person. Threats like that should be taken very seriously. Especially about killing, you don't know the state of mind the other person is in.

That someone should not assault the person who made the threats, or else that someone will be charged for assault by the person who threatened to kill in the first place.

You should not beat him up. Restrain him/her. But to be truthful I would just give him one of those "you better not touch me" comments. Saves face.

You can defend yourself if you are about to be assaulted. Words shouldn't provoke an attack since words cannot physically hurt you.
