Good question. In my opinion, all wrench sizes should have the same denominator cause that would make so much more sense, but ... they reduce fractions that can be reduced. So a 12/16 is a 3/4. Whcih makes a bunch of people who probably did not major in math have to do difficult and tedious denominator conversions all the time. Grrrrrrrr.

You'll never see a wrench with an even number on top and bottom. Factor out by dividing 12/16 by 4/4 (12/4 = 3 and 16/4=4) so a 12/16 wrench is actually a 3/4 inch wrench.

it is called a 3/4. that's also why they don't have an 8/16 or a 4/16.

This answer is very obvious, so don't think too hard on it. 12/16 is the same thing as 3/4, so wrenches like 24/32 don't exist either.

All wrenches and all sockets should be in 16ths. It would make finding the right one so easy. No conversion of fractions in your head while you are trying to do real work.
1/16, 2/16, 3/16, 4/16, etc. Simplicity in itsself.
Maybe that's why we should go metric? It makes more sense.
