Since, you dont know who is/are fooling around with your personal files seeking help from IT people in your office is not a good idea becuase you dont know whom to trust and who knows, they are the one who are fooling around since they are the people who knows a lot when it comes to computer matters.

I suggest you install personal firewall or anti-virus with built-in firewall like Bitdefender http://www.bitdefender.com/ in your laptop and configure it the way the woman above mentioned.

Have your office IT people configure your novell connection to permit ONLY what you need to access, and BLOCK all incoming that is NOT a reply to your outgoing.

Password protect your files.

Be SURE your files are NOT listed as shared.

These are the most common things I can think of to do.

Just install a firewall like ZoneAlarm. It's one of the best firewall out there. Then even you have shared folder/s they cannot access it without allowing them (on your ZoneAlarm "firewall" tab).
