I need help with my daughter's 6th grade math!?

Question

Instead of dividing 800 by 24 Sam made an equivalent division problem with smaller numbers by dividing the dividend and divisor by 8. Then he quickly found the quotient of the equivalent problem. What was the equivalent problem Sam made, and what was the quotient? Write the quotient as a mixed number...my brain hurts!

1. Divide both 800 and 24 by 8. You will get 100 and 3.

2. Divide 100 by 3. You will get 33.3333 (repeating). As a mixed number, this is 33 and one-third.

3. Try it on a calculator...it really does work. I'll use this as a challenge for my students tomorrrow--thanks!

First take the equation 800 ÷24 =

Divide both numbers by 8 and you get the equivalent problem:
100÷3=

The answer can be written many ways:

As a whole number with remainder this is 33 R 1

As an improper fraction this is 100/3

As a decimal this is 33.33

As a mixed number this is 33 1/3
(thirty-three and 1/3)

move decimal over 2 places and 8 divided by .24 equals 33 1/3

If you divided both by 8, then you would get 100 over 3, same as 800 over 24....You get 33 1/3.....pretty easy stuff

it looks like this is a hard way to say reduce (800/24).
400/12
200/6
100/3 = 33 1/3

and then check 24 * 33 1/3 = 800
