And if we can't have a nuclear-free Middle East, what is so wrong with a balance of power? Didn't it prevent World War III during the Cold War?

Nuclear energy has a hard time because some think it can lead to nuclear weapons.
As for nuclear weapons, I'm not sure. Who says that one country can have them and another cannot. All I know is that the devastation that an atomic bomb can do is so massive. If there was ever a war the defeated country could just go all out. Not to mention a leader that doesn't care. I bet Hitler would probally have used them if he had them.

How old are you? Do you remember the cold war at all? The biggest difference is that Iran will actually USE the nuclear missiles, they have already shown they have absolutely no respect for human life...look at the suicide bombers and their wacky belief that killing the "infidels" will gain them entrance into Heaven... Meanwhile, the Soviets wanted it basically as determent, not to actually use it...and they wouldn't sell it to terrorists who will sneak it into a country or worse... Additionally, Iran has already stated that they will annihilate Israel ASAP when they have the bomb...the entire premise of your question is fundamentally flawed for that reason alone!
Yeah, I'd sleep a whole hell of a lot better knowing that there is a balance of power with nuclear weapons between US and no one else!!!!!!

Israel with nukes and Iran without nukes IS a balance of power.
When is the last time you saw Israel on a platform, surrounded by a mob, screaming "DEATH TO THE INFIDELS!!"
MAD was only part of the equation in ending the Cold War. Another factor was Radio Free Europe.
Iran will not allow any Western influence in.

what prevented www3 during the cold war was russias lack of economy. they didn't have any money. look how they "controlled" afghanistan. pretty lack luster if you ask me.
