I was in class today and we were talking about the moon and somebody brought up the dark side of the moon. I was really curious to know the answer. Also, wouldn't be cool if they made a scary movie about it?

Hell, I can get lost on the dark side of Jacksonville, Florida. The moon would be a snap.

Well now...let's correct our terminology first...

There is no "Dark Side of the Moon."

There is a Near Side, and a Far Side of the Moon.

The moon travels in a circle (almost) around the Earth as it
travels around the Sun. The same side of the Moon always
faces the Earth. So sometimes the Sun is shining on the
Near Side, and sometimes it is shining on the Far Side.

I surely hope you wouldn't get lost up there on the Moon because you would loose a very expensive vehicle, and all the money spent to train you to go up there would be wasted. There are plenty of maps of the Far Side from NASA, so if you are a good map reader you should be okay. I would not look for any road signs or interstate highway direction signs while up there though.

The moon revolves about once every 27 days. When we see a full moon, it's dark on the other side of it. When we don't see a moon at night, the side (the "dark" side) is in full sunshine. If you're lost on the dark side of the moon, just wait a couple 'a weeks...you'll be in full sunshine...or see a drug counselor. It's getting lost on the dark side of the sun that I'm afraid of!

Perhaps you could be just as lost on the bright side of the moon, only you'd be able to see better!

considering the fact that if you WERE on the dark side of the (without a space suit) you would freeze to death, all you would have to do (with a space suit) is wait for the moon to rotate until you weren't on the dark side anymore.
