I started taking them about 4.5 years ago, stopped for a few months last year, and then started again. While I was off the pills, I lost a lot of weight, but I also experienced serious depression. Now that I'm back on them, I've been gaining at least a pound a month, no matter what I do, but the depression has been milder. I want to stop taking the pills because I think it would be better for me physically, but I'm worried about my emotional health.

I'm interested in any opinions and experiences. Thanks.

It will be a huge step forward toward your hormonal health!

Many women are taking anti-depressants because of hormonal imbalances. The drugs (SSRI's) work the same way as our progesterone does! Progesterone is identical to the hormone that our bodies produce. It's our natural "anti-estrogen".

Depression and weight gain are two symptoms of possible estrogen dominance. Women using natural progesterone have reported dwindling depression and weight loss.

I would try a different kind of birth control and let the doctor know that your feeling depressed. I had the same problem with the weight gain with the nor plant and the depo and now I haven't been in birth control for 3 years. I still struggle with the weight and I am losing it now but while gaining the weight I was very depressed and it does bring down your self esteem. I weighed 132 before I started birth control and 206 when I went off now I'm down to 183 but I am taking pills to lose the weight.

OMG i totally feel you. I have a major hormonal problem. When im on the pill i don't get PMS or depressed as much and I get my monthly every month. When im off the pill, forget it, i get pretty mean and depressed and randomly get my monthly when it feels like coming. I know that the pill just helps regulate everything. I bet your Dr. can jut prescribe something to help boost you up when you're feeling down.

i would look for other causes of your depression. the only way i can think of birth control effecting your depression would be if you already have a disorder that makes your hormones out of whack like, early menopause, hypo or hyper thyroidism (since youre gaining i would think hypo) or even if youre naturally irregular. good luck.

If you get pregnant, you will gain a lot more than a pound a month.

I suggest that you see your doctor. Maybe you need to try a different birth control.
