The same reason that they wear robes and sit high up behind a huge "bench" here in the USA --

It's a combination of tradition, along with a show of power. The robe (and wigs, where worn) are a sign of power, meant to show everyone who is in charge.

Cops wear uniforms and hats, the President has "Hail to the Chief" played, the Queen has her crown, and judges have robes and wigs.

all people used to wear that wig at one time, judges wearing them just became a tradition

Tradition..it is a uniform so to speak, that represents this person as honorable.
