I think mine does. My cat responds to a lot of things said around the house when we aren't even directing a command at her. We had a dog that new we were talking about her dog treat. I use to ask her if she wanted a treat, she would run to the laundry room and sit and look up at the shelf where I stored her box of treats. It got to where we couldn't say the word treat even when we were talking amongst ourselves because she would make a bee-line for the laundry room and sit there looking at that shelf until I would give in and give her a treat. One time I was talking to my mom on the phone and telling her about this. I didn't dare say the word treat so I spelled it out. Sure enough our dog picked up on it and ran to the laundry room!! So, yeah, to answer your question, I think most of the time they understand us as a young child does, like say around 2 - 3 year old does.

I am not completely sure I will admit but I have a feeling that your pets understand some words you use frequently that involves them. My dog doesnt act like she understands most of what we are saying but she understands her name and the word "walk" because she loves going on them and it is a word she tries to remember. Usually if your pet doesnt want to remember a word you say that they dont care about, they wont. Some words that are things that bother them they might remember because it concern's them and they do not want to do/go that/there. You must also remember that some animals are more important than you think. Some gestures that you make they might understand.
I hope you enjoyed my answer and your question is at least a little bit answered. Good Luck! (and good question)

no and here's why: Picture yourself as a dog living in china. You understand the usual commands of Sit, Lay, etc. Whatever the chinese words are...but they keep talking in chinese and you have no idea what they are saying... I think it's probably the same way. All you know are the commands directed towards you like your name, and Bad Dog, and Come Here, etc.

They don't understand all of it, but some they do. When I ask "where's daddy" My big girl either looks at the door if he's not home or looks at him if he's in the room, or goes to find him where ever he is. they know other people's names like when my brother comes over, i let them know, one gets all excited, and one hides. Their is other stuff they know too.

Yes I do. I beleive animals have that sixth sense and they have their own unique way of communicating with us. My cat knows exactly what I mean, he even "talks smack" meows back after I tell him something he doesnt like, etc. They are definetely smarter than people give them credit for, they just use a different way of communcation than we do on a simpler level.

My rats know I'm having a bad day when I come home from work. It's as if they are laughing at me, the little punks.
