He can move one space in any direction, however, there is a special move called a castle in which the King takes the Rook's place, and the Rook moves one space over to protect the king. In order to make this move, neither the King nor the Rook must have moved yet, and there must be a clear path from the K to the R, this can be done on either the Queen or King side. It is a good defensive move to use towards the middle of a match to confuse your opponent after he or she has already set up pieces for a mate.

If the king is not on an edge, and there are no other pieces blocking him, and no possible checks, the king has 8 possible spaces he can move to at any given time. If the king is on the edge, but has not yet moved and can castle, then the king can move to seven different spaces. All of this one space at a time except castling.

One in any direction UNLESS you are castling. That is a move where the rook comes over next to the king and the king jumps over the rook. This can only be done if there are not pieces between the rook and king, and if the king or rook have not moved before, and if the king would not be in check on any of the spaces covered. He cannot castle out of check.
You are talking about the king in chess, right?

The king can move two spaces to castle, after that one space. There are rules to that move, by the way, calling check is not a rule!

Hi. The king can take only one step in any direction. Try not to move him if at all possible. Have a great match and may you win in 10 moves.

One at a time, in any direction as long as it is not put in check by the move. Except for castling and I never understood that move.
