I have two jobs: one teaching for a college, one working for an insurance company. I HATE working in the corporate environment. I don't like the hours. I don't care about if the company does well or not. I think most of the people who work there lack imagination and spunk.
I've worked in corporate America several times, and each job I've held, I've felt unsatisfied and unhappy. Working in academics, I feel overworked, but happy.
Is this odd? Does anyone like working for a corporation?

OK, so explain to my why I can't convince some of my family members that I really would be happier having no benefits in my little part-time teaching job than having a salaried job with benefits for an insignificant insurance company? The products the company sells are a rip off! At least at a college, I can change someone's life (and have been told that I already have by several students).
Grrrr! Why can't my family just shut it?!

First of all you should do what you love. Having a job that one hates can make anyone unhappy. I wouldn't worry about the people who think that I would be better off doing what they think. It is all about you hon. This is your call. You have to go with your heart. I know you gotta be good to be at a college.I am a student and I know how hard you professors work. Hats off to you! Do me a favor? Pray for me cause I don't have a job.I am trying to get where you're at.

I don't think it's odd at all. Every corporation I've worked for has been chock full of liars, imbeciles, and people who don't have a problem stealing other peoples lunches from the break room. There are always a quotient of good people in each office, but I have found that they are consistently in the minority.
Aside from the people, there is always a bureaucracy in place that seems hell bent on two things: One, not spending any money unless they absolutely have to (even if you prove to them that spending more earlier on will save the company money in the long run). Two, not taking into consideration new ideas that, while they might be extremely profitable to the company, would require more effort in the short term.
I am very happy that you have broken free from the corporate world, as some spend their lives drudging away without ever seeing other options out there.
Oh and to your additional comment, "Grrrr! Why can't my family just shut it?!", if they can't come to terms with the fact that you're happier where you are, then perhaps you should tell them exactly that.

I completely understand and agree. In the corporate environment there is a great amount of pressure constantly on you to perform and to perform well. If you make a mistake, many times your job is at risk. This is why these companies lack creativity. No one is willing to take a chance and do things differently. As far as academics, schools tend to overwork their teachers if he or she is a good at their job. They can probably tell that you enjoy it and you probably do an excellent job.

I have learned one thing in this life and thats if you have a job that you like youll be there forever if you dont like it you wont be there long anyway. I started driving when i was 13 years old and i now have over 5 &1/2 million miles on the road with out a fender bender. You have to like what your doing or you might as well quit and look for saomething you do like

It's not odd. The corporate jungle is not for everyone. Some thrive in it, others don't. If you are happy in academics then stay there. If others prefer the "artistic" environment then they should stay artists. If others don't want to work at all ... so long as they aren't leeching off someone, then that's ok, too.

Corporate environment stinks. I worked in mortgage lending for 25 yrs, now work for an armored car company...so much less stress I can't believe it....don't dread going in, when you're done, you're done, no e-mails, faxes, phone calls, no disruptive/ counter-productive work environment, no constant deadlines, no boss looking over shoulder, no cubicle boredom, finally have job security (but 6-day work week), BUT pay is much less, too. For explanation of why corp. world is like it is, check out "Class War in America" by Charles M Kelly, [chptr 8] or e-mail me. Avoid the rat race as long as you can.

I work for one.
I've become involved in the Union side of things. It's made my stay much more interesting. I've had many positive discussions with both Union Executive members and Management.
I enjoy it now that I am more directly involved.

I've already got my stash... While the rest of the world is working, I'm sitting by the pool waiting for my kids to get home from school.
I started at the very bottom of that ladder, got sick of it and started my own thing... A few years latter, I sold it, and here I am!

Yes. I left. I am now a CNA pursuing my RN. Going back to school after all of these years is intimidating, but there is really no fulfillment in auditing and doing bank reconciliations.
