the monologue is about someone climbing the stairs and half way up forgetting whether he was going up or coming down.

It sounds like a slap stick routine use in the 30's films.

Guy starts up when someone meets him on the stair, says something and the man starts down when someone comes to the bottom of the stair and says something and the man turns to go back up. This goes on several times until he forgets whether he was going up or going down.

As a monologue, the voices are off stage and you only see him running up and down the stairs.
