Some states allow children 14-16 to work after school unill like 6 or 7pm on school nights or until 8pm during the summer and weekends. I know Iowa does. You could work at a grocery store as a carryout person or a dishwasher at a resturaunt.

But you really should be looking at "under the table" stuff. Mowing lawns, yard work, kidsitting, shoveling snow, painting, maybe a paper route? You'd be surprised at the cake you could pull down doing odd jobs like that.

Offer to mow the neighbor's yard for $15. Say you only do it once a week that's, $60 a month, and it only takes like an hour to mow a yard. Or maybe someone would give you $20 a night to watch their children for a couple hours a few nights a month. It all adds up. I guess it depends on how motivated and reliable you're willing to be as to how much you can really make.

You have a good point. At 14, you won't be able to get job per se but that doesn't mean that you cannot earn money. I began working at 12 by selling calendars door to door for a home business that my neighbors operated. Guess what? I pulled in a couple hundred bucks a week. Not bad for a 12 year old. Now I don't advise door to door sales these days but there are ways that you can make money... and help your parents out in the process. What are your skills and hobbies? Have you thought about putting them to use for money??? I don't know you well enough to know what you can or cannot do but there are books at your local library that can help you decide. Perhaps you can tutor kids in your favorite subjects or run a story hour for younger kids to give their parents a break. I am not talking about babysitting but rather just showing cartoons or reading or even putting on a puppet show. Do you think it's lame? What about $5 a kid for an hour or two with 5-6 kids at a time??? What about designing websites for local businesses at $20-50 per page?

If you do things the right way (legally) your parents can get some sweet tax credits and some things you may want for the business can be tax write offs... like your computer, your internet service, cell phone bill, etc. Maybe you don't want to provide a service kind of business. Why not consider selling a product ... video games or sports books or a newsletter???

If you want things now that your parents cannot afford, wait til you want to go to college or want a car or your own apartment. A business that you set up now can help you get some cash in the bank for those future needs. And if you start saving now, it's quite possible to retire completely from work in your 40s or 50s while your friends are out there at Walmart pushing shopping carts because they let their teens pass them by.

If you are serious about making money, get serious about what you can and want to do... and then do it!!! If you love what you're doing, you really can't call it work, can you???

I've got a list of books compiled from my local library system. Below is an organization called Junior Achievement that can help you network with other teens who are making money working for themselves or their parents. Check it out.

Book List:

Fast Cash for Kids … Bonnie & Noel Drew
Better than a Lemonade Stand … Daryl Bernstein
50 Money Making Ideas for Kids … Lauree & L Allen Burkett
Jobs for Kids … Carol Barkin & Elizabeth James
The Kids’ Business Book … Arlene Erlbach
Making Cents … Elizabeth Wilkinson
Make More Money Than Your Parents … Mike Bundlie and Others
How to Be a Teenage Millionaire … Art Beroff

Realistically, i wouldn't worry about getting a job quickly just to
pay for interests.

Your parents are wrong in the sense that they shouldn't be making
you pay for yourself at such a young age.

Instead, focus on developing a good skill set for the future.
This way, you can always have something to fall back on or pursue.
Skill sets include, but are not limited to, programming, a good
business sense, and etc (which are all that i can think of.)

Honestly, focus on school more than you do on work.
School & knowledge always pay off in the future, but things like
the newest pair of nike shoes or an ipod aren't what you should
concern yourself with.

However, if you're desperate, do some community jobs.
Such as mowing lawns, interning, working part-time at a day-care center,
and etc.

I would focus more on learning and leaving work for when you really need it.

Let me suggest you stop being such a "consumer" to some extent to lower your "always wanting something" mindset. Hell, you're young, you don't need so much. Enjoy what you do have and don't look so much to acquire stuff. If you can just change your outlook a little that will change and improve your situation a lot. At 14 you can't really work in the normal sense of the word but you can maybe babysit or mow lawns or something like that, but my main advice is to relax a little and lower your consumer mindset. Your parents are right not to buy you a bunch of stuff. You will understand that better in a few years.

Well, since you are under 16, you have to have a work permit, and normally still you cannot work under the age of 15. But my friends at Chick-fil-a (spelling?) tell me you can be 14 or 14 1/2 to work their. But do not give up, you CAN work at 15. I started my first job when I had just turned 15, so seriously try Chick-fil-a. I know how excited and anxious you must be...I was. Good luck, best wishes.

If you love kids, try babysitting. I made good money babysitting asking for about 8-10 dollars an hour depending on the age of the children. You could also petsit. If that's not down your alley get a work permit from your school then look around and ask around. You could even try getting a job at your school working in the snack room or cafeteria.

if your parents have any friend with young kids you could get a babysitting job if you like that kind of thing. if you are 14 you can offically start working but only so many hours! so you could always get an after school job say at an ice cream store or something along that line! or maybe if one of your relatives is in a business you could help them! like my aunt owns a flower and produce store that my bro helps out with. hope this helps!!! I always had the same problem but I got a babysitting job for the neighbors! and it is really nice cause they are both 10 year old girls and really good!

the legal age to work is 16 but if you get a work permit from your school you can actually work at the age of 14 or 15. ask your school administrator about the work permit. Once you have got that completed and if you go and apply for a job just make sure you tell them that you have a work permit.

hoped this helped =)

u can try working at ice cream places like baskin & robins or ben n jerrys or u could apply at chick-fil-a those are really the only places 14 yr olds might get hired. at 15 they start hiring for like baggers at grocery stores. but ur really not going to be able to work anywere until youre 16 it really doesnt matter if u have a working permit or not cause out of all of the 16 yr olds and up there not going pick a 14 yr old (a child) to work for them unless there just completely desperate which i doubt any job is..and even if u do get hired u wont barely get any hours so just wait!
