As you said there are two types of squads, cheer and pom. Obviously cheer squads cheer and pom squads use poms. Some teams like to mix it up a bit and so both, but if are only doing a pom routine you are a pom squad not a cheer squad. So no, cheerleaders don't use pom poms. And as to pom vs cheer, it depends on what you likE. If you like tumbling, stunting, dancing and jumping, cheer leading is for you. If you prefer dancing then pom is for you. Be warned though, some pom teams do basic BASIC tumbles and jumps but nothing to hard.
