having it built in is required for games (and movies) since they need constant access to the drive and a high constant transfer rate which USB can't keep up, but for everything else it doesn't really matter.

But if you need to lug around an external drive, then that defeats the purpose of 'ultra' portable, doesn't it?

It depends on how often you use the CD/DVD drive.

If you're going to use it frequently (say to listen to music or watch DVD movies), you need it built in. If you're just going to use it to back up data and install software, no big deal.

its pretty important imo .. whats ultra portable about humping around an external drive ... and u never know when you'll need one to read somthing or save somthing ..
