Well, it looks like most of the other answers come from America or those that composed them live in cuckoo land. The first thing George did after taking Iraq was to get a well known American oil giant (Amoco I believe) to take over the oil fields and distribution of oil. America's oil back home is on melt down and no new oil wells have been found of any significance since the 1970's or before. There is a national oil crises and if America can't buy the oil on its own terms it will simply take it from whoever: like it has from Iraq. America at the moment represents a real threat to the free world. America has been warned to seek alternative energy but any real developments in this field have been sabotaged by the greedy oil barons. Well America you are now suffering for your greed, the problem is you fetch everyone else down with you.

It was not about stealing oil but about making sure that the oil was sold in dollars. The US economy relies on the dollar being used for the oil trade. When oil is traded in dollars all other countries want dollars to buy oil. How do the get dollars - by selling products to the US. Now the Federal Reserve prints dollars for next to nothing which are then used to buy goods from abroad. This is effectively getting something for almost nothing. E.G if you can print $300 for almost nothing and use these dollars to buy a TV which you then sell for $400 then you can see where I am going with this. This is the reason that the US runs a 48% trade deficit - they import 48% more goods than they export.

Now here's where Iraq comes in. Saddam in 2000 insisted that all oil deals through the oil for food program were conducted in Euros. This was damaging to the US economy because demand for Euros increased and demand for dollars decreased thus hitting the US's ability to get something for nothing. What does the US do? Invade and after the invasion ensure that the oil is once again traded in dollars. Now Iran have started selling oil for Euros and Venezuela look set to follow suit. This will damage the US economy.

Further more regarding sharing Iraqi petrol and oil, the Iraqi govt is being forced to pass a law giving US and British petroleum companies 30 year exclusive rights to the oil trade in Iraq (see link below).

Every drop of oil from Iraq is going directly to the USA. Just ask the tanker captains who are loading it in Basrah.
The world oil prices are being falsely maintained at a high prices by the USA in collusion with the Saudis (OPEC) to pay for the Iraqi war.
The actual cost of crude oil production at the well head to the loading dock is between $4 to 7 USD per barrel, (FACT) so who is getting the rest of the money and who is falsely keeping the price UP.
In 2000 and 2001 crude was selling at $7 per barrel.
The Iraqi's at that time under sanctions were getting $2 USD per barrel from the UN and the USA, Kuwait and the UN got the rest for war reparations and administration.

You should be able to find your answers in the CIA's World Fact Book, online.

The export partnerships should give you an idea of how much business Iraq is doing with other countries.

Yes, the Iraq war was about securing the oil supply in the Middle East.

The policy has failed. It was a bad policy.

We now have problems getting oil out of Iraq.

Why don't you look at exactly where the oil is going and see for yourself. You may be amased that it is NOT going where you think it is.

We were never in it for the oil, but the press thinks so.

The oil is going to Syria and Turkey, with the proceeds going to the Iraqi government.
