WWF (or WWE as it is now known) bought the intellectual property known as ECW in 2001 following a bankruptcy settlement. The brand has been ressurrected this past year as a corporate strategy to use former stars from the original ECW roster and generate revenue for the WWE corporation. Be aware though, that the "new" ECW is very different in many regards from the "old" ECW. Most notable, is the departure of Paul Heyman who ran the "old" ECW and headed all creative efforts with Tommy Dreamer. The new ECW is written and supervised by the McMahon family and their team of writers. What has resulted is that many of the hallmarks of the old ECW are now gone. For example, many of the ECW originals wrestle for the company, but have taken a backseat to homegrown WWE talents like Hardcore Holly, The Big Show, and Test.

Well it will always be apart of the WWE. Cause Vince owns both. So any time he wants he can have them come together or make trades and so on.
When Vince owns both their always connected in some way.
