Pizarro had 168 soldiers when he captured the Emperor Atahuallpa at Cajamarca. Atahuallpa had a retinue of approimatley 80,000. This however does not imply military prowess. The Spanish had firearms, horses & a ruthless war ethos that the Inca could little comprehend & I would venture were psychologically overwhelmed.

My sources says he started from Panama with 180 ment. As you can see from the answers you've already received, the Spainards didn't defeat the might of the Inca Empire as much as they simply got close enough to the supreme Inca, Atahualpa, to kidnap him and hold him for Randsome. One other fact people tend to forget is that Atahualpa had just won a devastating civil war against his half - brother Huascar. So the Incans were a more than a little war weary. Further more, like the Atzecs, the Incas were recent conquerors. Some of the subject peoples may not have been too enthusiastic about coming to the Supreme Inca's aid (forgetting the adage about "better the devil you know...".

Francisco Pizarro my grand, grand, grand, grand parent defeated and captured Atahualpa in the city of Cajamarca in September 1532 with 168 men.
It is said that Atahualpa had with him around 30,000 troops.
The cannon fire and horses so terrorized the indians that they were caught of guard and my cousine dramatically captured the Inca Emperor.
