a parabola will always be able to be written in the form y=ax^2+bx+c

where as a hyperbola will not, it will look like

X^2/A+y^2/B=1 where A=a^2 and B=b^2or
it will look like y=(b/a)sqrt(x^2-a^2)

note for a hyperbola, a and b cannot be equal to zero but for a parabola they can.

You just have to memorize these formulas and think about how they might look for different values of a and b. The best thing is to look up example in your textbook and practice.

Do you just need to tell from their equation which is which? Or do you need to find their centers, foci, equations, etc. If you type in specific questions, lots of people here (including me) will help you.
