Ante meridiem - before noon
Post meridiem - after noon
meridiem = meri - mid, diem - day = noon

Logically 12am is 12 before noon or midnight the night before while 12pm is 12 after noon or midnight the night after. This makes 12am and 12pm ambiguous times. Some people use 12am for noon and 12pm for midnight but you can't presume everyone will. If the time is critical, ignore the 12 and call it noon or midday.
