Hundreds of movies were shot in Venice. Among the most recent and historical, "The merchant of Venice" starring Al Pacino (from W. Shakespeare).

Venice (Venezia) actually needs number introduction, see getting there with hotelbye . This city is a fabled destination for centuries. Only the name Venice will do to conjure up a number of photos, even for individuals who have not yet collection base in Italy. From gondoliers in striped tops to the Rialto and the Bridge of Sighs, bad balls, wonderful barges, courtesans in gondolas and crumbling palaces experiencing roads manufactured from water Venice is a fantastic city. Once the only real connection across the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge scars the location of the island's first settlement, called Rivus Altus and has become one of many a lot of place that Venice has to offer.

Dangerous Beauty is my favorite movie. It is about the Venetian Courtesan and Poet Veronica Franco who was tried by the Inquisition. I think it is an excellent look into the decadence of Renaissance Venice.
Everyone mentioned Casanova. Even though it is total revisionist history I think it is a very enjoyable and aesthetic look at Venice.
I recently watched a film called Secret Passage about "Converted Jews" trying to escape through Venice to Istanbul where they would not be persecuted. This film also takes place during the Renaissance and shows a darker side of Venice.

Note: Life is Beautiful was not set in Venice, it was set in Arezzo.
Historical movies set in Venice: Casanova, Dangerous Beauty, Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, Death in Venice, Senso. These are films that I have seen. Some of them are in Italian.
If you go to the Internet Movie Database, www.imdb.com, you can search for movies filmed in Venice, assuming that movies filmed in Venice were indeed set there.
Good luck!

ancient gateway to the Orient, Venice has always been captivating, thanks to the magical fascination of its setting suspended between sea and sky. The land on which it rests is located in the centre of the large lagoon, a unique amphibious environment marking the border between land and sea, dotted with islands and islets that can only be reached by boat. Once historical outposts and later useful offshoots, the islands in the Venice lagoon were part and parcel of the Serenissima, the Republic that ruled Venice until the end of the 18th century. Once densely populated and bustling with activity, they now bear testimony to cherished artistic and cultural traditions and are places of incomparable charm and atmosphere that make a visit to the islands an experience not be missed.
