Porphyria or the Charlie Horse refers to any cramp where a leg muscle is locked in the contracted position.

Muscle cramping is a symptom for a number of different problems. Lack of potassium is a big one, so have a banana or two. Another is lack of calcium, so drink some milk or have some other calcium rich food. Another is dehydration, so have a glass of water and stay away from diuretics like coffee or tea. Another is exercise without stretching, so make sure to warm up and stretch properly before and after exercise. Another is your muscles being cold, so try to warm them either with a heating pad or a warming rub (like Icey Hot or Tiger Balm). It could also be tension, and I find that Advil or some other drug to bring swelling down will help this out. It could also be a sign of lack of magnesium or phosphorus, so you should try taking multivitamins regularly.

Having low potassium can cause some major problems, so you should probably go to the doctor as soon as possible to just make sure you have good levels. And good luck with getting rid of your cramps, I have had a few restless nights with foot cramps, and they can really make your waking life difficult!

If he walked or ran a lot more than normal at work, that would explain the cramping. Also would happen if he was stuck behind the desk with the cubicle setup not ergonomically correct for his body--literally being "cramped" in one place for a long time.

Cramps are usually a sign of fatigue and lack of hydration, because electrolytes (water-borne minerals like potassium and sodium) that aid muscle contraction and relaxation are not being supplied properly.

Massage and stretching act directly on the muscle, to redistribute (I'm too nerdy to say "squish the chemicals around") the electrolytes and help get the muscle tissues firing correctly, or at least less painfully.

From now on he should gently stretch his quads and hamstrings before (and during breaks at) work--it couldn't hurt.

Besides, a massage from his honey after a hard day's work is always nice ;)

Lots of water, potassium-rich foods like bananas, raisins (which are also high in magnesium), and electrolyte drinks (Powerade, Gatorade, etc) will supply electrolytes he needs. Backing off on caffeine (because it is a diuretic) will also help the hydration issue.

Hope that helps.

Yes, I've been there, and am presently too. :zero) Potassium is a well reply, so is Calcium/Magnesium. It is simplest to take a complement that includes all 3 so that you get the right stability. I've taken this direction myself, in part on account that I hate bananas! LOL! I additionally drink Pregnancy Tea, and devour plenty of the meals that include well nutrients. Usually I say opt for meals first, and complement in case you are not getting sufficient after that. But on this case you wish to preserve a stability and that is tougher to degree with meals. Try to get across the first quantity, and to not exceed the moment quantity for each and every everyday. Calcium 1500 - 2000 mg (*use citrate, ascorbate, or malate) Magnesium 750-a thousand mg Potassium ninety nine-500 mg (*use citrate) Good meals resources of all three are: Dairy merchandise, fish, spinach or leafy inexperienced veggies, black strap molasses (additionally first-class for iron!), herbs like, nettle and purple raspberry leaf, each may also be made into tea. Hope you think greater quickly! Not lengthy left! ;-D

maybe his body needs more potassium, bananas have it and some other foods i used to get cramps and so i started to eat bananas a few times a week and i dnt get cramps anymore.. you should also put ice on the part where he gets the cramp

You can also take him to his doctor and tell the doctor the problem and he can tell you what he needs to do for those cramps

Hi i get cramping in my foot and the best thing you can do is just rub it then ice it, or if that doesn't work then go to the doctor and/or chiropractor

I would look at his diet. Make sure he gets eough essential fatty acids in his diet...the good fats. Secondly make sure he gets enough good salts. I personally like Celtic sea-salts and taking that has helped my husband get over these nasty muscle cramps

Just a cramp. Don't worry, it will pass any time it comes.
