the sound is the result of vibration.
the amont of water affects how much sound the vibration reflect

I think it might have something to do with the amount of space taken by the water. If there is less water is the tone higher? There would be less surface for the sound vibrations to bounce off of.

Im guessing the amount of oxygen in them... Im just in 8th grade so dont take my advice; but thats why I would think so.

i would imagine Howstuffworks.com has several articles on acoustics. It has to do with the wavelength (and therefore frequency) of the sound waves.
