I already know that the baby could be big. That's not a problem, because I'm having a c-section. Will the baby have low or high blood sugars, and will this continue to be a problem for my child or is it something that goes away as the baby grows? What's the deal?

Gestational Diabetes can also cause heart defects (generally a septal defect or "hole in the heart") and spinal cord defects such as spina bifida. Also, a large baby is not "OK" just because you have a C-section. It's organs can be larger than normal, which can cause them to malfunction, and it can have increased body fat, which will set it up for problems later in life. Immediately after birth, the baby is at risk for LOW blood sugar because it is unused to having to provide it's own if yours have been high the whole time.

I had gestational diabetes, and was told of course, as you were, that the baby could be too big (mine were 7lb 15oz, and 8lb 5oz respectively). I was also mainly cautioned that the baby could be born with high blood sugars.
