There is a common misconception that leaving your computer on 24/7 is better. It might have been true a few decades ago when computers first came out, and they were not designed to be turned off and on all the time.

Nowadays, with the amount of crashes a certain operating system provides, it is nearly impossible to not turn off your computer. Thus computers these days are built to be turned off and on without any problem.

That being said, as far as what still makes it last longer, I would follow this simple rule: If you're not going to use the computer for 2 or more hours, turn it off.

Opinions vary. Electronic components undergo the most stress when cold, so turning them on and off frequently increases the risk of failures. I leave my computer on nearly all the time so that virus and spyware scans can run overnight. I only turn it off if I'm not going to be using it for several days.

Better not if you are using a PC or laptop. PC and laptop is not like a Server, they are not designed for non-stop operation in terms of hardware usage. And most of the software (include Windows) will encounter a program crash when it has been ran for too long like 36hrs or more.

It's probably not a good idea. There is expensive parts that heat up and burn out. Like my Uncle said years ago about light bulbs, it's cheaper to turn them off than on.

I Leave mine on most all of the time.
Probably should reboot it at least once a day or so though.
It will be interesting to see what others have to say.

I bought my computer 2 years ago. It works 24x7 (Windows XP). I restart it once per month (when Microsoft issues patches)
