I would leave it on. Just turn off the monitor. (It is the big power hog). I have 1 computer that is 5 years old and it has been on almost the entire time. I only turn it off if I am going away for more then 1 day or if we are having lighting storms. It has never over heated or had troubles.
Also many computer guru's believe that the power up is the hardest on computers.
PS don't forget that XP will put your system on standby to conserve power if needed.

Only if someone is else is paying for your power. Imagine your power supply, which on a new computer is 400 watts. If this were a 400 watt light bulb, would you turn it off? Heck yes.
It is true that turning on and off your computer wears on the power supply and components, which will eventually cause it to fail. However, as computers realistically only have a 5 year life span because of software upgrades, constantly starting and shutting down your computer will have no effect on it's reliability.

We usually leave ours on all day, but turn the monitors off when we aren't using the computer. A CRT monitor (not a flat screen) will use the most electricity. The power use of LCD flat screens and the towers themselves is not that bad.
If your computer is always on and always connected to the internet then you will be at greater risk for viruses and trojans. So, we usually only leave them on all night if we absolutely need to.

It is probably more preferable to leave it on but utilize power management features like hibernation...etc to save power and save on the monitor and hard disk. You should occasionally restart to clear your RAM which may get used up and not released by software running on your computer...and to restart services or reinitialize programs that start automatically at boot time..because sometimes you may inadvertently shut down processes that are needed for good system performance. Sometimes a computer that is left on all the time may begin to slow down and just needs to be rebooted. Constant boots and reboots (i.e. every night, every morning) my lead to premature failure of hardware components....and or system file corruption.

DO NOT LISTEN TO DANA5169'S ANSWER!! If you leave your pc on for long periods of time, there is always a possibility of hardware failure (ex. CPU fan fails). Also, what if your Power supply fails? i'll tell ya, your computer will burn up, and there is a chance of fire. Turn your computer off if you aren't planning on using it.

NO!
Turn off your pc & monitor when not in use. Caveat: if just leaving for a bathroom break or something, just log off - don't turn off. But if you're going to be away more than 15 min, shut down.

The jury is still out. Some say no, to conserve energy. Some say yes to get burn in. This is supposed to set in printed circuits and lenghten the life of components.
