in that vehicle, you could prob get the best accel times with a 3500 rpm or so clutch dump, then shift at redline. This will be stupidly hard on your drivetrain, engine, and clutch, and is generally a bad idea. If you want something fast, get a sports car, not an xterra.

You want to shift so that you wind up right at the RPM where you are at your PEAK horsepower in the next gear. Peak horsepower in that engine is reached at 4800 RPM, so for maximum acceleration you want to rev the engine so that you wind up at 4800 or thereabouts when you move into the next gear. That will take some experimentation.
