Switching major league affiliations isn't uncommon, and usually happens because the major league team gets a better offer somewhere else. In this case, the Yankees switched their short-A level affiliate to Staten Island, which is a better market and much closer to Yankee HQ, enabling them to keep a closer eye on their prospects. It looks like Oneonta is with the Tigers now, so they've still got a team.

Staten Island built them a $20,000,000 stadium on the north shore, across from Manhattan.
