There are several ways psychology can be an effective means of controlling hunger. Some people eat when they are unhappy, sad, stressed out, or angry. They want to replace their bad feelings with good ones, and food is sometimes a good substitute, because it is enjoyable, satisfying, and temporarily takes the mind off of your real problems, in the same way that some people use alcohol. Eventually, some people begin to associate these unwanted feelings with hunger. A psychologist can help determine if your unhealthy eating habits have an underlying cause, and help you find ways of dealing with your problems in a healthy way, including choosing healthy alternatives, such as eating a stick of celery instead of chocolate.

To a point, yes, one can convince himself of anything he wants. However, there does come a certain point where your body just won't be able to take it anymore whether it's starving yourself or being so full you feel like your stomach is going to burst.

Yep, how do you think people fast for days on end. You have to believe in something or let faith take over.
