sounds like the starter is not engaging with the flywheel entirely. The teeth on the starter gear grind against the flywheel instead of meshing with it. You probably need a new starter because they don't repair them like in the old days. If you keep trying to start it with it grinding, you could mess up your flywheel....very expensive to replace.

a loud whine is prob a belt or starter motor. Or a locked bearing for a pulley, which causes the belt to drag over it.

i mechanic for a living,and its probably the Bendix in the stater not engaging in to the flywheel,,they,ll whine like this if they don't catch on it,,it probably isn't even trying to start either,,while its doing this,,only one other thing will do this,,and that's a busted flywheel,,they,ll whine and whine,,and never start,,i have only seen this a few time s though,try the Bendix,,that should fix it,,good luck hope this help,s.

Could be the starter is going and nedds to be rebuilt or replaced or you have a loose drive belt.

It sounds your starter. Is it a Dodge or Chrysler product? If so it's probably normal.

It really depends on the wine... Sorry, if it sounds metallic, then it is probably the starter and if not then it is probably the belt.
