1. The type of turtle is a 'Painted turtle', named for the brightly colored red, orange, and yellow designs on the belly.

2. You cannot usually tell the sex of a young turtle. It usually has to be sexually mature to be sure.

3. The general characteristics that work or most turtles are:
MALES-
- in-curved bellys (plastrons)
- long, thin tails
- vent (cloacal opening) near the middle of the tail
FEMALES-
- flat or out-curved bellies
- short, wide tails
- cloaca near the base of the tail

4. In pond turtles, like the Painted turtle, we can also look for long foreclaws on the male.

5. In most turtles* the male is smaller and more colorful than the female- but that only helps if you know that they are both the same age.

*- When the males actually fight for females by ramming, the males will usually be larger than the females.

"Male :Have a flat or concave plastron (better for fitting on top the female during breeding)

Female: Have a flat or convex plastron (more room for the eggs)

Male: Have the opening (cloaca) about 2/3 from the shell towards the tip of the tail

Female:Have the opening (cloaca) closer to the shell

Male: Long claws on their front legs (this helps them grip onto their mate)

Female:Shorter claws than males

Male:Often have larger/fatter tails than females

Female:Smaller tails

Its almost impossible to tell the differences when they are babies."
