(no dumb answers like dont drive it or something) It being 3/4 ton its almost guarenteed that it has 4.10, is their any way to tell without pullin the pumpkin cover? I also heard that a 2 barrel carb can sometimes suck more gas than a 4 barrel sometimes? can anybody help me out?

the best thing you can do for a 3/4 ton pickup in that year is to find a five speed Tran or one that has got over drive it will drop your rpm down and really help on the gas mile age. a two barrel carb will help you get gas mile age it will kept you out of the four barrels a norther thing is to advance your timing a Little and that will help you to. good luck.

You would have to check the rear end, sometimes there is a tag with numbers on it. Or look in your glove compartment for coed numbers then search on the net to determine your rearend. I doubt it is a 4.10, more than likely a 3.73 A 2 barrel will not use more gas than a 4 barrel. The 2 is smaller, only 350cfm's On a 4 brl the front 2 barrels equal 500cfm's. To get better gas mileage just give your truck a good tuneup, get a big air fiter and a high flowing muffler, the better an engine breathes, the more efficient it will be.

another way to check the rear gear ratio is to go to the id tag i think it's in the glove box and there should be a code number for the diff ratio then you can call the dealer and they will tell you the ratio. ok 2bbl or 4bbl yes it is true that four bbls are more fuel efficent because a 2bbl carb has bigger verturies and butterfly valves than the primary barrels of a four barrel carb the four barrel carb will only burn more gas when your driving hard and the secondaries are opening. plus with a big truck like this it would be nice to have the extra get up and go for passing on the highway.

Jack up the rear. Mark the bottom of the tire and spin it one revolution while counting the turns of the driveshaft(mark it too). It's hard too tell close differences but easy to figure out bigger ones. Remember a 3:73 will not give a great diff in mileage from a 4:10. Gotta drop all the way to 3:55 or so too get much(even then it's won't be that great. Heavy vehicles suck gas. No way around it.

Sometimes by giving your engine more horsepower you are able to save gas. Therefore, you should consider buying an underdrive pulley kit. It will free up some ponys and will increase your mpg. Another thing that will do the same is if you get an alluminum driveshaft or a racing flywheel, these two are a bit expensive though. Also make sure your truck is properly tuned so it can run as effecient as possible.

3/4 ton trucks were never designed to be fuel efficient. The weight of the vehicle alone will cause efficiency to be low regardless of what you do to it. The only thing that I think would work would be to install a late-model 4.3 liter fuel injected Vortec V6 engine. If you can find a donor car for a cheap price and you have the tools and know-how to do the swap, it might be a cost-effective solution.

look in the glove box for the RPO codes, something like GT4 GU4, etc. the 3.73 were more popular then the 4.10s.
i would look for or pick up a 700r4 tranny for it for the overdrive.
after that, tuneup and maybe a new carb or rebuild kit for yours.
