I know its probably a good reason, but is it because there are laws against it? they're messy? they smell? theyre too dependent? they need too much attention?

Yes, yes and yes. Having a monkey is like having a 2 year-old for its entire lifespan. It's exhausting, enraging, horrible work that you really need to put every last waking second of your life into. They are messy, you will have to put diapers on it because if not they will just go to the bathroom all over your house. They are far too dependent, need too much attention, and most importantly are not domesticated (therefore, still WILD) animals. Many monkeys get more violent the older they get and some people actually break out or remove their canine teeth so they won't seriously injure a person, obviously this renders them unable to ever live in the wild again. Getting a monkey will ruin both yours and its life.

They are not good pets, they are messy (will throw things around) are VERY demanding of attention and can get nasty if they don't get it. They are difficult to house break. AND there are very strict laws about exotic pets all over the world and all but a few monkeys would fall under "illegal pet trade".
Spider Monkeys and Squirrel monkeys and 2 other types are legal in Canada and that is it. The last time I checked.

All of thee above. It's not against the law if you get a special permit to own one but they are filthy animals and the males jack off all the time which is just way too nasty. Not to mention they can be mean!

When they bite (and they sometimes do), they can cause you to get very ill.
