I just bought a laptop for the first time, after using a desktop for 10 years. I did a lot of research, and Carling is right. It depends on what you want to do, also. I got all the things he listed. I found building one too expensive, though. I watched for sales, and bought mine for $675 total, including linksys wireless router. I would also suggest a 15.4" screen, the 14" were too small for my taste.

well for a start have one built local to you, so that should any thing go wrong with it returning it will not take you long.

now the computer setup depends on your pocket
so the standard setup would be
512 meg of ram minimum
80 gig hdd minimum
processor would be your choice but must be a 64 bit system
top of the rang mother board ( manufacturer MSI)
DVD dual layer rewriter
a good graphics card with 256 meg of ram minimum

Now what you need to be thinking about is not todays computing but tomorrows computing, so you need to be getting something that will upgrade in the future

the cheap computers you see advertised today are already out of date so invest in one for the future

First make a list of what the computer will be used for once you have that done then you can start calculating for memory, space and cards that you might need.
