I've heard or read somewhere that if you take a glass/cup, like for drinking from, and put the open end up against a window or door and put your ear against the bottom of the cup, you can hear conversations really clearly that are taking place on the other side of the window.

Yes. I've done it. Actually, the trick is to put the glass against the wall of an adjoining apartment. In our apartment in a townhouse in Alexandria, VA, my wife and I spent enjoyable evenings listening to the hystrionics of Henry and Gloria.

I've heard putting a cup up to a door, but not a window. usually you can hear pretty well through windows without aid.

never tried it but it makes sense if it is a glass cup. The vibrations of sound would be amplified due to the span of the window and the glass of the cup would just be a condensation of all that sound. try it out if you want to be sure.
