The same thing can be said for people who use the word "gay" in this way.

I lean more towards the idea that they are intentionally being crass (many know this is a button-pusher for a lot of people), as I have heard this from people of all walks of life- most who claim to be intelligent and enlightened.

Your thoughts or experiences?

i dont think it's an issue of ignorance OR vulgarity.

honestly, i think it's a combination of lazy and insensitive.

"retarded" and "gay" are words that have very clear meanings, and everyone understands them. obviously, you could use a word that would more accurately reflect your feelings on the matter, and be less offensive, but "retarded/gay" are simple and easy.

I use it in conversation. I'm being intentionally crass, but I have the added bonus of being uneducated as well. Whenever someone has been offended, I just ask is your kid (or whoever) retarded or developmentally challenged? If the latter, I'm obviously not talking about him/her. Since no one who has a developmentally challenged kid ever says retarded, they can't very well get offended.

Lots of boys use that. They are usually just being crass but the frase can be used by anyone. meaning that a stupid person saying that is stupid and an intellegent person is being crass. The word does not matter, its the person that says it who decides your question.

I have to admit, I have been known to use 'retarded' in conversation now and again. Not very often though.

But 'gay' really annoys me. What does sexual orientation have to do with how good/bad smart/stupid something is?

I think people mainly do it because people around them do. That's how it is for me, anyways (with starting to say retarded).

I've only noticed it in the teenagers that come over to hang with my kids. I thought it was just their group trying to get me to react. They mostly add 'tard' to other swear words like, fXXXtard, and shXXtard, gaytard, etc. For them it doesn't have anything to do with a lack of intelligence, for them it's just a part of their adolescent desire to be thought of as cool. I'm sure they will grow out of it.
